Camp Counselor

 

Whether you are working on the climbing tower, on the stage or in the lake all our counselors teach their respective activities to the campers. Along with teaching the campers during the day you get to live with them in cabin along with at least one other counselor. Activities that are taught at Wazi include:

 

  • Adventure Bound – Trip Leader (must be 21+), OLS
  • Athletics – Archery, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Climbing Tower/High Ropes, Fencing, Riflery, Tennis, Soccer

Camp Counselor Job Description

Senior Counselor

CIT Director

 

Facilitates the CIT training program.

CIT Director Job Description

The CIT program is for 16 year olds who will enter 11th grade after camp. Wazi’s CIT program teaches leadership and lifeguarding, and is a transitional period between being a camper and entering our staff as a counselor. This is the first step in helping to develop and train the finest staff anywhere.

Division Director

 

Support all the Counselors and Campers living in the Division.

Division Director Job Description

Division Heads need to be capable of demonstrating a level of maturity that earns the respect of both the counselors and the campers under their oversight. Their presence around the division must be tangible and their response to issues brought to their attention must be prompt and decisive. Although they are authority figures in their divisions, they must be patient, understanding and approachable.

  • Communicate all necessary information between senior staff and counselors within your division.
  • Run morning division meetings (make necessary announcements, ensure the campers are familiar with their chosen schedule).
  • Complete daily cabin care within your division (maintain a record of scores, inform cabins where they can improve and reward the cleanest cabin weekly).
  • Work with counselors to help each cabin maintain a positive and cooperative spirit.
  • Help counselors manage campers’ behavior.
  • Monitor any issues that develop among campers and/or counselors, advising them how to take proper steps toward resolution and interceding where necessary.
  • Communicate any notable occurrences within your division to the Camp Director.
  • Once weekly carrying out an “on duty” shift by patrolling the camp till late (to make sure campers are not sneaking out at night).
  • Manage staff by giving feedback to the counselors in your division and ensure they are following/applying the camp rules.

Coordinates the running of all Evening Activities and Otter Days.

Evening Activity Coordinator Job Description

The Evening Activity Coordinator is responsible for ensuring all evening activity and Otter Days are probably planned and ready to run. The Evening Activity Coordinator needs to be able to multi-task, remain organized at all times, and be extremely detail-oriented. The Evening Activity Coordinator needs to have good communication skills in order to ensure the staff running the activities are ready.

Waterfront Director

 

Oversees the safe and fun running of the entire Waterfront.

Waterfront Director Job Description

The Waterfront Director is responsible for the running and safety of the entire waterfront, they also oversee and organize the pre-camp set up/post-camp packing of the waterfront. The Waterfront Director needs to be well organized, able to guide the waterfront staff and pull them aside when they are not for filling their duties, and be able to keep calm in stressful situations.

  • Minimum 21 years old or older
  • A desire and ability to work with children aged 6-16
  • Previous experience in leadership and in a similar position
  • Certification in Lifeguarding, Lifeguard trainer

  • Ensuring the waterfront is set up during staff training and put away at the end of camp (boats, docks, buddy board and Lifeguard equipment).
  • Carry out in-service training with all lifeguards at camp and ensure they know the camp procedures.
  • Assess all campers swimming ability through swim checks and inform the Program Director of those who need swim lessons.
  • Monitor and feedback waterfront staff’s performance, reinforce good work and redirect staff who need help.
  • Run free swim (whole camp at the waterfront), assign lifeguard and no-lifeguard positions.
  • Train CIT’s to be lifeguards following the American Red Cross course.
  • Above all make sure the waterfront is run safely.

Health Center

 

Deals with the day to day medical needs of campers and staff.

Health Center Job Description

The Health Center staff are responsible for the medical needs of approximately 200 campers and 100 staff. These range from administering daily medications to any injuries sustained at camp.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certified RN, NP or Doctor
  • Maine nursing or physicians license

Duties and Responsibilities Include

  • Administer medications, first aid, dietary and health care treatment and maintain camp health center.
  • Daily working schedule to be divided among the nursing staff, however general working hours include nursing as needed which includes morning and evening medication distribution, +/- 4-6 hours per day, on call alternating evenings.
  • Advise Directors of any significant Camper health issue and after discussion with the Directors communicate with parents regarding the health issue related to their child.
  • Advise Directors of any Camp health issue.
  • Conduct weekly inspections of camper living quarters and camp buildings to ensure a healthy and safe camp environment.
  • Educate staff during Staff Training regarding health and safety procedures, precautions, reporting and routines needed to ensure the health and safety of campers (1st and full session nurse only).
  • Perform camper health screening and documentation upon arrival, and confirmation of health documentation pre-arrival.
  • As needed, drive and accompany campers or staff to doctor’s appointments and/or ER visits.

Kitchen staff are responsible for providing all meals at camp according to the ServSafe and Health Inspector guidelines. Kitchen staff need to have good time management, be well organized and detail-orientated.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Head Chef – minimum of 3 to 5 years of culinary and related experience as a leader and mentor is required
  • Experience in the job area
  • ServSafe certification for the Head Chef and 1st Cook, preferred if all kitchen staff hold this

Duties and Responsibilities Include

HEAD CHEF

  • Plan, write and Prepare menu items while interacting positively with co-workers and chefs.
  • Recommend quality and quantity of food items to be purchased, including portion size

  • Select, train and monitor all food preparation and personnel in the execution of their duties
  • Experienced in confronting performance issues as well as giving rewards and recognition.

1ST COOK

  • Support the Head Chef in the clean and safe running of the kitchen.
  • Oversee the kitchen when the Head Chef is off.

KITCHEN STAFF

  • Operate, maintain and properly clean stove, steamer, food processor, mixer, slicer, oven steam table, tilt kettle.
  • Ensure food is stored and cooked at correct temperature by regulating temperature of ovens, broilers, grills and roasters.
  • Prepare special dietary meals for campers and staff as required
  • Ensure all foods are rotated to minimize food spoilage.
  • Inspect and clean food preparation areas, such as equipment and work surfaces, or serving areas to ensure safe and sanitary food-handling practices.
  • Prepare food of consistent quality following recipe and production and portion standards.

SERVERS AND DISHWASHERS

  • Ensure food is served according to ServSafe, Health Inspector and other regulations.
  • Clean all dishes and silverware.

  • Answering and making phone calls.
  • Responding to emails.
  • Researching products and services required for camp.
  • Sorting mail and packages that are coming in and out.
  • Running the camp store.
  • Act as role model to all children attending camp.
  • Interact with children, parents/guardians and co-workers in a professional manner at all times.
  • Understand and adhere to the standard operating procedures for camp.
  • Immediately report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors or abuse.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Know, enforce and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas.
